Once upon a time....
È l'inverno dell'anno 1220. Sta nevicando e fa molto freddo.
It is the winter of 1220. The snow is falling and it is very cold.
I poveri animali selvatici non trovano da mangiare. Stanno morendo di fame.
The poor, wild animals can find no food. They are starving.
Gli animali vanno alla città di Gubbio, in cerca di cibo. La gente lascia qualcosa da mangiare per i piccoli animali fuori delle porte delle case.
The animals go in search of food in the town of Gubbio. The people leave something for the little animals to eat, outside their houses.
Una notte, un lupo affamato entra nella città, in cerca di cibo come gli altri animali.
One night, a hungry wolf enters the town, searching for food just like the other animals.
Il lupo uccide delle pecore e poi se ne va. Ma ritorna ogni notte e ripete la stessa cosa.
The wolf kills some sheep and then goes away. But he comes back every night and repeats the same thing.
La gente ha paura! Le donne e i bambini stanno chiusi in casa. Gli uomini escono armati, cercando il lupo.
The people are frightened! The women and children stay locked indoors. The men go out armed with weapons, looking for the wolf.
Ma non lo trovano. Ogni notte, il lupo continua a terrorizzare la città.
But they do not find him. Each night, the wolf continues to terrify the town.
Un giorno, Francesco capita a Gubbio. Vede la grande paura della gente.
One day, Francis happens to be in Gubbio. He sees the great fear of the people.
"Andrò dal lupo," dice.
"I will go to the wolf," he says.
Gli uomini lo seguono al bosco e lo guardano ma da lontano.
Hanno troppa paura!
The men follow him to the forest and watch him, but at a distance. They are too scared!
Il lupo esce dall'ombra. È molto spaventoso. Francesco gli dice, "Vieni qui, fratello lupo. Che tu non faccia del male né a me né a nessuno!
The wolf comes out from the shadows. He is very frightening. Francis tells him, "Come here, brother wolf! You must not hurt me or anyone!"
ll lupo si ferma e ascolta. Francesco dice, "Voglio che ci sia la pace. Io ti prometto di farti dare ciò che ti tocca per vivere dagli abitanti di Gubbio. Non soffrirai la fame."
The wolf stops and listens. Francis says, "I want there to be peace. I promise that the people of Gubbio will give you everything you need to survive. You will not suffer from hunger."
"Ma tu, fratello lupo, devi promettere di non fare più male agli altri animali o agli abitanti di Gubbio."
"But you, brother wolf, must promise no longer to harm the other animals or the people of Gubbio."
Francesco gli stende la mano e il lupo alza la zampa destra e la mette nella mano di Francesco. Tutti vedono che si sono messi d'accordo!
Francis puts out his hand and the wolf lifts his right paw and places it in Francis' hand. Everyone can see that they have reached an agreement!
Tutti sono contenti! Ogni giorno, il lupo entra ed esce dalla città. Mangia il cibo che gli abitanti lasciano per lui, senza fare male a nessuno perché è ben nutrito.
Entra nelle case per giocare con i bambini.
Everyone is happy! Every day, the wolf enters and exits the town. He eats the food that the people leave for him, without harming anyone because he is well fed. He goes into the houses to play with the children.
Dopo due anni di amicizia, il lupo muore. La gente prova un grande dolore. Tutti sono molto tristi perché hanno perso un grandissimo amico - il loro fratello lupo.
After two years of friendship, the wolf dies. The people feel great pain. Everyone is very sad because they have lost a great friend - their brother wolf.
